Oxygen

Oxygen is the active life sustaining component of air, comprising of approximately 21% of the air we breathe. It is highly reactive, colorless, odorless and tasteless. It is the 2nd largest industrially consumed gas. 

Below are the uses of Oxygen 

  1. In the manufacturing of steel 
  1. Used in medicine for therapeutic  purposes  and in treating patients with respiratory disorder 
  1. In combustion system to have increased reaction rates 
  1. To increase combustion temperature in iron and copper blast furnaces, iron melting foundry cupolas and rock or slag melting cupolas 
  1. In glass industry to reduce particulate and nitrous oxide  emissions in melting operations 
  1. Used with fuel gases like acetylene in gas welding, gas cutting, flame cleaning, flame hardening & flame straightening

Nitrogen

Nitrogen makes 78.03% of air. It is non-toxic, colorless, odorless and chemically inert. It is the largest industrially consumed gas. 

Below are uses of Nitrogen

  1. Inerting reactors and storage tanks, purging vessels and pipelines of toxic or flammable gas and vapours 
  1. Nitrogen used in iron and steel works degassing and metal-stirring, purging, cooling, slag splashing, gas knives. 
  1. In laser cutting as an assist gas for laser cutting of stainless steel, aluminium. 
  1. Nitrogen is used in brewing, soft drinks and packing to exclude air from the product and de-aerate water. 
  1. Nitrogen is also used for fire prevention and safety purposes.
